Product Review: Udi’s Gluten-free blueberry muffins

So I’ve been on a bit of a diet-thing recently, to rid my system of what I felt was an overdose of sugar. I’ve been eating fruit for dessert. Yep, fruit.

However, I have decided that the place to have fun is: Breakfast! I tried out some gluten-free bagels that were pretty darn awesome. And yesterday when I went to Whole Foods to buy coffee (which means I ended up buying a small cart worth of stuff, dang) I spotted Udi’s Cinnamon Rolls. They come with icing. Icing, people! But alas, they come in at about 330 calories. A tad high for me. So I went with the blueberry muffins instead.


And they make for a pretty good trade!

Why, you ask?As I was searching for a photo of the packages, I came across one website that said, “Gluten free blueberry muffins, I bet they taste gross.” Well you bet wrong my friend!

These babies are moist. And they have little sugar granules on top. Like mom used to make! (If she could bake…)

They are of course, gluten, dairy, and soy free. They contain eggs, so they’re not vegan. Nutrition info is as follows:

Now, considering that the average blueberry muffin contains 380 calories and 19 grams of fat, this is not bad. And with coffee, it’s pretty filling. If you added, say an egg or two with this you’d be pretty set. They’re great for mornings on the go, or for those times when you’re at Starbucks and you get that “woe is me” feeling while looking at the pastry case wondering why the world can be friendlier to a gluten-free lifestyle.

And let’s be clear: these aren’t those giant mounds of cake that masquerade as breakfast foods. (I used to live across the street from a Spinners muffin and cinnamon roll shop, so trust me, I know what I’m talking about here – and that circle of hell Dante forgot to mention? The smell of baking cinnamon rolls wafting in your bedroom window at 8 in the morning.) They are normal-sized muffins. They are enough. Tasty enough!
